Episode #153: The real deal with masterminds
Masterminds. Y’all have heard this term thrown around the online space for a while now. If you’ve been in my network for any length of time now, you’ve heard me talk about the Legacy Mastermind. And you’ve been on the hunt for something in 2020 and so you’ve considered a mastermind, what it could do for you and with you, and you’re just not sure if it’s the right fit for you right now.
In today’s episode I want to talk more about what a mastermind is, why they exist, and why it may or may not be a smart move for you and your business.
And now I’m recording this on the heels of our final Legacy Mastermind retreat this year that took place in Nashville, Tennessee. I was able to sit down face to face with some members of the Legacy Mastermind to reflect on this past year, plan for what’s to come in 2020, and to celebrate all that we’ve accomplished in 2019 together. It was super fun, ridiculously impactful, and it’s lit a new fire inside of me that I would say wasn’t missing, but maybe one that I’ve pushed aside for a little while.
So buckle up! Today’s episode is going to be super juicy and you’re going to want to really dig deep and ask yourself some of the questions I’m going to ask you. And if it triggers you, or makes you feel uncomfortable, or maybe like I’m talking directly to you, you should listen to those internal nudges. They’re there for a reason.
First the basics, what in the world is a mastermind? A mastermind is a group of people who come together to collaborate and support one another through a common goal.
I’ve seen masterminds of people who have brick and mortars and the common goal is to increase retention. I’ve seen masterminds of female executives who run 7-figure companies. I’ve seen masterminds of people who are scaling their course-based businesses to 7-figures. There’s all kinds of masterminds out there so when considering one, it’s important to find one that speaks to your values, your goals, and how you want to work.
And while you’re listening to the podcast or reading this blog post, in this episode I’m sharing a lot about the Legacy Mastermind because enrollment is now open and I’ll be sharing my own experiences inside of masterminds. I find that a lot of times if we can share our experiences, it makes it easier to work through these ideas and would benefit you to see how other people have done this thing that you’re thinking about doing.
The goal of Legacy Mastermind is to help female entrepreneurs in the online space scale to their first 6-figure year. I have women from all walks of life and types of businesses, but the commonality is that everyone is working towards the 6-figure mark.
I was a part of a mastermind a couple of years ago to help me create my breakthrough year and get out of feast or famine months. In 2020 I’m going to be a part of a mastermind to help me scale my membership site. I chose those masterminds because the goal of the mastermind was something that I was working towards.
Tip #1: If you’re considering a mastermind, make sure that the goal of the mastermind is the same goal you have.
Now, not everyone is ready for a mastermind. I think there two types of people who enroll in masterminds.
First is someone who has an existing business and knows that something needs to change or wants to change something. Regardless of the motivator, a change needs to happen in their business. They’ve seen some success, have worked with clients in some sort of capacity, but know that they want more and aren’t exactly sure how to get that more or what it could even look like for them.
Now the second person is more rare. This second person is someone who maybe hasn’t even started a business yet but is ready to make a quantum leap and doesn’t have the time or energy to try things on their own. They want to fast track the process. They are extremely motivated, don’t mind being the dumbest person in the room, and take constructive criticism and being challenged well. Again, this person is really rare but they do exist! I’ve had the pleasure of working with some of them inside of Legacy Mastermind.
When I think of masterminds, I think of super ambitious people who are looking to make a huge shift. They’re tired of playing it small, they’ve invested previously, have seen results, but are really ready to make some big changes.
Masterminds don’t necessarily have a course or content as a part of them. Although in 2020 the Legacy Mastermind is getting exclusive access to my 6-figure framework which I am SO loving creating, but the beauty and power of a mastermind is that it meets you where you are, you get feedback on what’s going on real time, and advice and coaching to help you achieve your specific goals.
Tip #2: If you’re considering a mastermind, make sure you’re ready to change and change FAST. Like really change, not just say it and think it sounds good, but truly ready for a change, in whatever form that may (or may not) look like.
The next thing to consider is if you like working in groups. The true gold in a mastermind is the focus on the group and helping your group members. Yes, the coach is important as it is her mastermind, but you’re going to get the most out of it if you actually plug into the community. I can honestly say from my experience, that the thing that I’ve loved the most about masterminds is the people that are in the mastermind with me. I’ve made life-long friends from masterminds, and these are relationships that have lasted way beyond the relationship I had with the coach. And do know that is normal.
One of the many reasons why I started the Legacy Mastermind was because I realized that most of my clients were lonely. They were solopreneurs working from their kitchen tables, in nap times, and/or in their basements. They plugged into their business in the mom cracks of time that they did have. But at the end of the day the only people they were talking to were their kids (kids are great, but we NEED adult conversations), me (as their coach), and their clients (as they were doing work for or with them). And while that’s all well and good, they didn’t have people they could go to when they were frustrated, or burnt out, or needed to celebrate something. They needed FRIENDS.
And I can say this too, that as soon as I got out of a 1:1 model and transitioned over into a mastermind model, my clients saw bigger and more significant success. Because they were networking, they were collaborating, they were actually developing deeper relationships and were happier in doing that. Which changed how they approached their marriages, their parenting, their lives, AND their businesses.
So while 1:1 worked, and my clients saw results, the real magic happened inside of the mastermind.
Tip #3: Be prepared to have your fellow mastermind sisters all up in your business. Because that’s actually what you need and what’s best for you.
Another thing to consider is your self-awareness and self-accountability. A mastermind is an experience. It’s not a system or a course or a plug and go thing. And it’s not all about your coach telling you what to do and giving you the answers. It’s a living breathing thing that requires you to get out of your comfort zone. It can also leave you in the dust if you let it.
I have a theory about masterminds, and really coaching in general. Those who see results are the ones who are (1) too stubborn to give up AND (2) take ownership of EVERYTHING.
I have had relationships turn sour as a result of my Legacy Mastermind. I’ve had clients leave the Mastermind early because they weren’t getting the results they wanted. It happens and I’m not here to sugar coat things, I’m here to tell you the truth of what happened. The commonality between those clients are this: they weren’t willing to do the work. And I’m talking about the TRUE work here. The mindset work, the reaching out and constantly learning, the tweaking and adjusting and adjusting again and pivoting. They weren’t willing to do it. And the hardest part of this is that sometimes that work takes time. And that time may be longer than we want it to be, but that’s the reality of the situation.
And if I’m being totally blunt here and honest with you, sometimes I don’t have all of the answers. You guys, NO ONE has the answers and anyone who tells you do is trying to sell you something. And if I don’t have all of the answers I own it but I also help you to work through it. And we figure it out together. That is what support looks like for me and my clients, and how I support them.
The point of a mastermind is to support you, it’s not to give you the answers. It’s to help you realize how you may change and shift to better serve you and your clients, but it’s also there to offer you the support that you need as you go into uncharted territory. Because you don’t know what a 6-figure business looks like if you’ve never built one before.
I remember one of the most insightful questions I asked one of my coaches was, “What does a 7-figure business look like?” It’s my goal to have a 7-figure business by the time I’m 40, but I don’t even know what that looks like or means for me. And so being a 7-figure business owner herself, she helped me to walk through what it might look like for me. She gave me some ideas, and helped me to figure it out for myself.
Tip #4: Self-awareness and self-accountability needs to be on your radar if you expect to see results from being in a mastermind.
Now the last point I’m going to make is probably the one that’ll make you the most uncomfortable. So don’t say I didn’t warn you. Deal? Deal.
If the idea of forking over thousands of dollars of your hard-earned cash, most of the cash that you don’t even have yet, terrifies you, then it’s probably a good idea.
Here’s the reality of the situation, you’ve listened to this episode of the podcast because you’ve been thinking about investing in a mastermind. You’ve read the sales page multiple times.
Total side note here: I have three people in my email list who have clicked on the Legacy Mastermind sales page over 100 times. Yep, if that’s you, you should probably just book a call. Just sayin’.
You’ve watched all the Facebook Lives from the facilitator of the Mastermind. You’ve read all of the emails multiple times. Every single thing that this individual says you agree with. You like her, you trust her, you know that this mastermind can help you, but you’re scared.
Scared of the money, scared of what she’s going to ask of you, scared to commit to something this big.
And I so get it, y’all. I really do. I invested $24,000 in a year-long mastermind at 8 months pregnant. I GET IT.
But here’s what I don’t get. Waiting around for your success.
Investing is hard and scary and confusing and strange to figure out. Yeah maybe your friends or family don’t get it. But what I don’t understand is you blocking your success. What if, dream with me for a minute, what if this investment that you’re considering is THE thing to get you to 6-figures? What if it’s THE thing to get you to 7-figures? That kind of growth CAN happen, if you allow it and you don’t let fear dictate how you live and work.
If you invested somewhere between $12,000 and $15,000 and got $100,000 out of it, that’s a pretty good investment, eh?
An investment is just that, it’s an investment. It’s meant to grow your business. So what if instead of focusing on how scary and hard it is, you focused on the potential that this investment has and the possibilities that lie before you.
And so if you’ve sat here and listened to me talk for this long, I’d argue you’re interested in the Legacy Mastermind. And so I want to tell you this….
If you’re waiting around for me to say the “right thing” or to speak to your specific pain point, or if you’re going to go and listen to 100 more podcast episodes and then head to my Facebook Group and consume everything there, stop.
